Robert Griffin III is getting a workout with the Los Angeles Chargers after spending his time recently working with Pep Hamilton in the offseason, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Griffin is a player that has been linked to the San Francisco 49ers in the past. Many thought Griffin could sign with the 49ers last season, but he elected to join the Cleveland Browns, where the road to starting was a lot easier.
He did earn that starting job with Cleveland, but lost it quickly when he suffered a shoulder injury in the team’s season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. He was activated from injured reserve in December, and wound up playing five games, completing 87 of 147 passes for 886 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.
Griffin also rushed for 190 yards and a pair of touchdowns. His numbers weren’t terrible given the circumstances, but they were the lowest of his career, even when just going by average yards per attempt.
When this offseason got underway, there was some thought that the 49ers could be interested in Griffin once again. The Browns released him on March 10. Hoyer is a much more stable veteran to take over though, and the Griffin rumors didn’t last long.
Still, he’s a player who was linked to San Francisco multiple times in recent history. He’s also drawn many comparisons to Colin Kaepernick over the years, with similar playing styles. They have been linked when people ask whether or not either of them have anything left in the tank.
I have no idea when it comes to Griffin, but I can’t imagine him having more to offer an NFL team than Kaepernick in 2017. Smart money is on him earning a job for next season first, though.
