The San Francisco 49ers are all but certain to be starting Brian Hoyer at quarterback when Week 1 rolls around. Matt Barkley and C.J. Beathard will get plenty of preseason snaps, but neither is expected to seriously compete for the No. 1 job.
Around the rest of the NFL, there will be plenty of quarterback competitions to keep fans intrigued throughout training camp. The Chicago Bears made things plenty interesting when they signed Mike Glennon and then traded up to draft Mitchell Trubisky at No. 2 overall. The Denver Broncos are letting it ride with the competition between Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch. In the competition for next year’s potentially monstrous QB class, the New York Jets seem comfortable with Josh McCown at the helm, while the Cleveland Browns spent a second round pick on DeShone Kizer and acquired Brock Osweiler in a Texans salary dump.
Speaking of Houston, they might have the most most intriguing QB competition between Tom Savage and DeShaun Watson. The Texans had been fairly measured in talking about the work Watson had to do before he could really compete for the job. However, Ian Rapoport is now reporting that the team is blown away by the progress Watson has made.
Recently, Bookmaker.eu offered updated odds on the various QB competitions. For the Texans, Savage opened at -210, but has been raised to -320. I would still lean in his direction, but maybe Watson is worth a wager?
