The San Francisco 49ers safety depth chart has taken some early blows in training camp. Three days after Jimmie Ward went on the PUP list with a hamstring injury, Eric Reid was sidelined on Sunday with an ankle injury.
After practice, head coach Kyle Shanahan said that Reid is getting his ankle checked out this afternoon. The safety limped off the field with the injury, and after returning briefly, he left for the rest of practice. The fact that he was able to return briefly is a good sign, but the severity of the injury will likely be known by tomorrow. Vinnie Sunseri replaced Reid with the first team defense, according to Jennifer Chan.
Shanahan had a bit of an update on Ward. He cannot say with absolute certainty how long the hamstring injury will sideline him, but he is hopeful Ward will be back for the team’s joint practices with the Denver Broncos. That means Ward is all but certain to miss the team’s preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs. Things could turn around quickly, but if not, Jaquiski Tartt, Lorenzo Jerome, and Chanceller James will find themselves getting a much bigger opportunity in that first preseason game.
