It was a more balanced day for the 49ers in their second padded practice of training camp

The 49ers have concluded their first week of training camp. Let's talk about what we saw!

The San Francisco 49ers finished their first week of training camp with their second padded practice and a more balanced performance on each side of the ball. One third of the way through team drills Jaquiski Tartt sustained a rib injury, thinning out the already depleted secondary. The offense took advantage of the new personnel to a certain degree but the defensive line still took their shots. Here are your top plays of the day:

Will Davis with a pass break up (PBU)

C.J. Beathard threw a short pass from the pocket to the left, intended for Aldrick Robinson and Davis jumped the route and tipped the ball for a PBU

C.J. Beathard to Cole Hikutini

Beathard rolled out of the pocket and threw a 15 yard pass to Hikutini who was being very closely covered by Lorenzo Jerome.

Solomon Thomas sacks Matt Barkley

The pocket closed in on Barkley and the first one to get there was Solomon Thomas who was facing Andrew Lauderdale.

Donavin Newsome with a PBU

Barkley’s pass intended for Blake Bell was broken up by Donavin Newsome who was covering the tight end on a pretty accurate throw.

Brian Hoyer to Pierre Garcon

It seems like this combination is on repeat. Hoyer threw the ball 15 yards deep to the left side where Garcon was being covered by Rashard Robinson. Garçon tipped the pass as a result of the coverage by Robinson and then managed to haul it in for a completion.

Arik Armstead swatting a pass

Armstead continued to impress with a swat down of a Hoyer pass with his long arms as the pocket started to collapse.

Aaron Lynch with a sack/Marquise Goodwin touchdown

Lynch quickly got around offensive lineman Garry Gilliam for a sack, but without live hitting, the play continued and Beathard connected deep to the left side to Goodwin who had gotten separation from Don Jones and Chanceller James.

Chanceller James with a PBU

James quickly redeemed himself three plays later on a Barkley throw intended for Aaron Burbridge. James “playing to the whistle” was what prevented a completion as Burbridge was just about to make the catch but couldn’t hold on.

Reuben Foster gets another interception

It was practically a replay of what happened yesterday. The defense showed blitz and Nick Mullens didn’t read it correctly. Foster hesitated in his spot and it made it look like he was the intended receiver.

Quinton Dial tips to Lynch for an interception

This “ridiculously tall” defensive line continued to disrupt the offense with their size. Dial tipped a pass from Barkley towards Lynch who was able to hold onto it for an interception.

Matt Barkley to Robinson

This seems to be Barkley’s MO. After a bad play he has a great one. Two plays later he threw deep to the right side to Robinson who was being double covered by Davis and James. Robinson made it a few yards further to the end zone.

The team has the day off tomorrow before another four day work week ending with the open practice at Levi’s Stadium on Saturday, August 5th at 10:15 a.m.
