Over the past few years, any approval polls we have done have focused on the San Francisco 49ers coaches and general manager. It has been safe to say very few people approved of the job done by 49ers CEO Jed York. However, we have not done any polls on his work in some time. I can’t even find the last time we did one.
With that in mind, I thought we’d put together a basic approval poll for York. I’m not entirely sure how often we’ll do these polls. My thought is once each offseason. After all, the hope is that he remains fairly far removed from the day-to-day football operations of the team. Maybe we do one at the end of the 49ers season, and then one again shortly before training camp starts. I imagine offseason performance will result in spikes one way or another.
This offseason has been a busy one for the organization. The 49ers hired John Lynch to be general manager and Kyle Shanahan to be head coach. The team was plenty active in free agency, signing a host of players in their roster overhaul. They gave out $68,275,000 in fully guaranteed money. It would seem pretty clear Lynch and Shanahan were given the green light to spend what they needed to in this first year of the rebuilding process.
At this point, what do you think about the job Jed York is currently doing as 49ers CEO? There is the football side of things, there is the fan experience side of things, and of course there is the relationship with the city of Santa Clara. There is a little bit of everything. On the last topic, things have been relatively quiet this year after a brutal 2016 in which there was a ton of back-and-forth between the 49ers and the Santa Clara city council. You can weigh each aspect of the job however you want.
I realize we could do this poll in a variety of ways, with a variety of measurements, but I decided to stick with our traditional 1-to-10 poll. I thought about doing “Approve” or “Disapprove,” but I like having a little nuance. So with that in mind, how do you rate Jed’s performance on a scale of 1-to-10?
