49ers training camp update, 8/14: Jerry Rice joins drills

The San Francisco 49ers open their 4th week of training camp with an non-padded practice

The San Francisco 49ers returned for their 4th week of training camp after two days off. The team flew back to the Bay Area following their late night win in Kansas City in the wee hours of the morning so a second day off was warranted. The first practice of the week was a non-padded practice but they still went through many of their usual team drills; 11-on-11s, goal line and a move the ball series. Here are your training camp updates:

Injury report

The list seemed to grow exponentially after the game and it looks as though the team is going to play it careful with several players. DeForest Buckner’s ankle injury was exacerbated by playing in the game and will likely not play this week vs. Denver and I believe the same may be the case with Ronald Blair (groin) and George Kittle (hamstring). The team kept Tim Hightower out of the game but he returned to practice, splitting reps with Carlos Hyde.

There is some good news though: Jimmie Ward may be back. Also Dontae Johnson and Brock Coyle participated in team drills in blue non-contact jerseys.

Alumni Day

Hall of Famers Jerry Rice and Steve Young spoke at the team meeting and then attended practice. Rice, however, took it another step by suiting up and participating in individual drills. Many of the players spoke about what an impact it was to meet them.

Line up changes

Reuben Foster practiced again with the 1s next to NaVorro Bowman. Ray-Ray Armstrong played with the 2s. The staff is easing Jaquiski Tartt back into practice and worked him in with the 2s while Lorenzo Jerome saw time with the 1s. Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh said not to read too much into that. Solomon Thomas worked in with the 2s.

While it wasn’t an every down thing, Matt Breida and Kendrick Bourne saw time with the 1s.

Interception Alert

Adrian Colbert managed two interceptions on the day, one each from C.J. Beathard and Matt Barkley. A third interception was made by Lorenzo Jerome off of a Beathard pass.

Big plays

Kendrick Bourne kept his momentum from the game going and had back to back catches with CB Will Davis draped all over him.

Punt return squad

It seems the 49ers are still holding auditions for the returning position. Today we saw Trent Taylor, Victor Bolden Jr., Aldrick Robinson, Kapri Bibbs and DeAndre Carter have a crack at it.

Red zone drill

From a few yards away from the goal line Brian Hoyer threw touchdowns to Carlos Hyde, Vance McDonald, Pierre Garçon and Bourne. He then had two more broken up by Rashard Robinson and Eric Reid.

Matt Barkley threw two TDs to Garrett Celek, one to Blake Bell and threw one away.

C.J. Beathard threw a TD to Raheem Mostert after being intercepted by Adrian Colbert.

Move the ball series

In 1s vs 2s, Hoyer put together a 9 play drive that ended with a touchdown pass to Logan Paulsen

C.J. Beathard’s drive ended in an interception

Barkley’s drive was 7 plays long and led to a field goal.

The team has one more practice before the Denver Broncos arrive for joint practices on Wednesday and Thursday.
