49ers injury report: Aaron Lynch day-to-day with ankle injury

The 49ers return to practice without one of their preseason Week 1 stars.

The San Francisco 49ers are back at practice on Tuesday, and they will be missing some key defensive pieces. Defensive tackle DeForest Buckner remains sidelined with his ankle injury, and defensive end Aaron Lynch joins him on the sideline. Lynch injured his ankle during Monday’s practice. He walked off under his own power, but the team declared him day-to-day with the injury.

The 49ers had some big defensive performances from their reserves on Friday, and Lynch was as big as any of them. He had two sacks and was a disruptive force. He has gotten his weight down, and while he was facing second string players, he did what would be expected of somebody facing lesser talent.

Linebacker Brock Coyle has been upgraded from limited to limited no contact. My guess is that moves him from individual drills to team drills, but with some precautions. He had been ahead of Reuben Foster on the linebackers depth chart, but that obviously changed in a hurry. He is competing for a primarily special teams role.

Safety Jimmie Ward remains on the PUP list. Will Redmond seemed to suggest on Monday that Ward was back, but the process continues for the time being.

Here’s the full injury report.
