The San Francisco 49ers placed rookie linebacker Donavin Newsom on injured reserve Wednesday, and they have filled his spot. The team signed Shayne Skov to a one-year contract on Thursday.
Skove has had a couple rounds with the 49ers, including from 2014 to 2016. The team waived him on May 2. The Stanford grad is primarily a special teams player, but with Newsom on IR and Reuben Foster dealing with a shoulder injury, he will likely see some defensive snaps this weekend.
Foster’s injury is an AC joint sprain, which is different from the torn rotator cuff that resulted in pre-Combine surgery. It is unrelated, but still concerning given the shoulder’s history. He is a limited participant in Thursday’s practice, doing zero contact work. It is better than being out entirely from practice, but I would be surprised if he played this weekend.
