The San Francisco 49ers made an interesting decision for their starting lineup against the Minnesota Vikings. Jaquiski Tartt is getting the start at free safety, and Lorenzo Jerome is his backup.
The team activated Jimmie Ward from the PUP list on Wednesday, but announced on Friday he would not play. Jerome got the start at free safety the first two preseason games. Tartt was the backup free safety at the open of camp, and took the first team snaps when Ward opened camp on PUP. Tartt injured his ribs and that allowed Jerome to move into the starting role.
Other 49ers not expected to play include wide receiver Aaron Burbridge and cornerback Will Redmond. Both are on the bubble, and injuries have them very much on the wrong side of the bubble. If they can get healthy by Thursday, they’ll get plenty of playing time in the preseason finale. But, that might be too little too late.
