Josh Allen: ‘It’d be a dream come true to play for the 49ers.’

The California native would not mind returning for his NFL career.

The San Francisco 49ers have locked in Brian Hoyer as their starting quarterback this season, but have not figured out their long-term situation. C.J. Beathard is pushing Matt Barkley for the No. 2 job, and given the 49ers trade up for him, he could be someone they target as the answer.

However, if they are not sure about Beathard after this season, they could be in a position to make a big addition next year. Kirk Cousins could be a free agent addition, but if not, the 2018 NFL Draft could feature quite a few options. Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen is one of them, and it turns out he would love to play for the 49ers.

Allen made an appearance on Adam Schefter’s podcast, appearing in the second half of it after Sam Darnold. You can listen to the audio here. Schefter asked him if there was an ideal landing spot, and he offered some details on the 49ers.

“I grew up a Niners fan. About two, two and a half hours from my hometown, so it’d be easy for my family to commute there. Obviously they have a long storied tradition of great quarterbacks -- with Steve Young, Joe Montana — it’s my favorite team, man. It’d be kind of a dream come true to play for the 49ers because growing up, I had a little book with my picture in a, there’s a face hole, and it says 49ers. So, we can go find that book and compare it to what could happen next year, and that’d just be really cool.”

There could be as many as five quarterbacks going in the first round of this year’s draft, with Allen, Darnold, and Josh Rosen projected by many as top ten picks. Plenty will happen to shake up the quarterback class, as well as the teams looking for quarterbacks. But maybe Josh Allen gets to come join his childhood team.
