49ers training camp recap: Top plays of the day 8/5

The big audience at Levi’s got to see some big plays by both the offense and defense

The San Francisco 49ers opened up practice to fans and 25,319 showed up and made their five dollar donation in exchange for some football and complimentary food and beverages. The team practiced for nearly three hours for fans in attendance at Levi’s Stadium and signed autographs afterwards. Here are your top plays of the day:

11-on-11s

Matt Breida gets loose

The first snap of the 2s went right from Matt Barkley’s hands into Breida’s. He snuck through the A gap which had been blown wide open by the OL and scampered up field for about 20 yards. Everyone has been talking about his speed and it was on full display today.

Brian Hoyer to Marquise Goodwin

Goodwin might have not actually come down in bounds with the ball but the effort is worth noting. Hoyer rolled out of the pocket and threw deep to the right side. Goodwin made a diving catch and it would have been debatable if his derriere came down in or out of bounds. Where’s the replay?

C.J. Beathard to Breida

Apparently Breida is not limited to running fast. Beathard threw the ball 30 yards deep to Breida who was being lightly covered by Pita Taumoepenu. Breida fully laid out for a diving catch just out of reach of the defender and was able to maintain control of the ball.

Hoyer to Pierre Garçon

This combination is a staple of the offense and Garçon is not afraid of anyone inside. Garçon who was being covered by both K’Waun Williams and Eric Reid was thrown a dart by Hoyer for a completion. I must note that this was after what would have been a ‘sack’ by Lorenzo Jerome who has been seeing some first team action.

Hoyer to Kapri Bibbs

With Hightower sidelined with an unknown injury, Bibbs worked in with the 1s. Hoyer threw a short pass to Bibbs who was being covered by Malcolm Smith. The play ended with a touchdown.

Move the ball drills

Barkley to Aldrick Robinson

The twos were moving the ball effectively down the field and Barkley capped the drive with a 15 yard pass to Robinson who was being covered by Ahkello Witherspoon and Vinnie Sunseri.

Hoyer to Garcon part two

Another sighting of this combination. Hoyer faked a handoff to Carlos Hyde and managed to get the ball to Garçon who was covered by Sunseri, Dekoda Watson and Reuben Foster.

Hoyer to Logan Paulsen for a touchdown

This play came at the end of a drive. The team was near the 10 yard line and Hoyer found Paulsen in the back of the end zone covered by Sunseri and Chanceller James.

Eric Reid with a huge hit

Barkley threw a 15 pass to Aldrick Robinson who got away from Keith Reaser but turned inbounds right into Reid who delivered a legal de-cleating hit on the wide receiver. There was a remarkable crowd reaction from the hit.

The defense gets on a roll

There was a series of about 10 plays where the defense accumulated numerous “sacks” on the quarterbacks. They were made by Taumoepenu, Watson, Solomon Thomas, Reuben Foster and Elvis Dumervil.

Eric Reid with an INT

Barkley was under pressure and “sacked” by Watson, who got past John Theus in the back field but the play kept going. Barkley let the ball go into the end zone where Reid came down with it.

The team has a day off on Sunday the 6th and returns to the facility to practice on Monday the 7th.
