Bruce Ellington waived by Jets with failed physical designation

That didn’t last long.

Bad news for former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Bruce Ellington. The New York Jets have waived him with a failed physical designation. The Jets claimed Ellington after the 49ers waived him earlier this week.

Ellington tore his hamstring a year ago, and spent the season on injured reserve. He missed time during the offseason workout program, and was struggling to move up the depth chart in 49ers training camp. Chris Biderman tweeted that Ellington did not look right in camp, needing extra trainer work in between drills.

If this had been a trade and Ellington failed the physical, he would go back to the 49ers roster. I don’t believe that is the case with waivers, but I am not 100 percent certain. Ego Ferguson was waived by the Bears and claimed by the Packers, with Green Bay releasing him due to a failed physical. He later signed elsewhere. I think Ellington simply becomes a free agent now. I would like to think once he gets healthy he’ll land somewhere, but his injury history is going to mean he is no more than a flier for most teams.
