The San Francisco 49ers officially return to real football today! The preseason is a wrap and we are back to regular season football for the first time in over eight months. The 49ers get things going this afternoon at 1:25 p.m. PT when they host the Carolina Panthers at Levi’s Stadium. The game will air on FOX as a regional broadcast, and you can see who will get the game on the broadcast map. Thom Brennaman and Chris Spielman will be in the booth, and Peter Schrager will be on the sideline.

The 49ers have a full offseason and four preseason games under their belt, but this is really the start of the new era. John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have been plenty active in turning over both the roster and the organizational culture this year. Now we get the first sign of where things stand. One game to start the season won’t tell us everything we need to know, but it could give us a decent idea where things stand in early stages of this rebuilding process.

The 49ers face a Panthers squad that welcomes back quarterback Cam Newton to full duties for the first time since last season. He had shoulder surgery this offseason, and only played limited snaps in the third preseason game. This will be his first game of full snaps since the end of the 2016 season. Will he be rusty?

Newton has some big weapons added in Christian McCaffrey and Curtis Samuel, and they could end up squaring off at different times with 49ers rookies Solomon Thomas and Reuben Foster. We know Foster will be starting at weak side linebacker and getting a lot of work in their nickel and dime packages. We don’t quite know the plan for Thomas. He can play some end in the base and tackle in their sub packages. The 49ers are expected to rotate extensively along the defensive line.

The 49ers likely will be without free safety Jimmie Ward. He spent August recovering from a hamstring injury, and is listed as doubtful for the game. Tight end George Kittle is listed as questionable while recovering from his own hamstring injury, but Kyle Shanahan said on Friday he would be surprised if Kittle did not play on Sunday. Defensive end Aaron Lynch is also listed as questionable, as he is dealing with a back injury. His status for Sunday is unclear.
