49ers-Panthers inactives: Jimmie Ward, Aaron Lynch sitting out

New, comments

The 49ers will be without their planned starting free safety and a depth pass rusher on Sunday.

The San Francisco 49ers and Carolina Panthers announced their inactives for Week 1, and as expected Jimmie Ward is inactive. Defensive end Aaron Lynch is inactive with a back injury, while tight end George Kittle is active in spite of a hamstring injury.

Ward continues his recovery of a hamstring injury that cost him the entire preseason. Ward was activated off the PUP list the third week of the preseason, but he remains limited in practice.

The 49ers appear to have settled on Trent Taylor as their return man for the time being. They deactivated Victor Bolden, who joins fellow rookies Ahkello Witherspoon and Pita Taumoepenu. Raheem Mostert is active, and can serve as the kick returner.

On the offensive line, John Theus is inactive, meaning Gary Gilliam will be the swing tackle. New guard Laken Tomlinson is inactive as he continues to get up to speed
