Fooch’s update: The 49ers officially ruled him out for the remainder of the game in the third quarter.
The San Francisco 49ers suffered a brutal injury in the first quarter of their week 1 matchup with the Carolina Panthers. Linebacker Reuben Foster went down on a play and appeared to grab his ankle. A cart was brought out to take him off the field. A short while later, the 49ers declared him questionable to return with a “leg” injury.
Foster was off to a great start, with three tackles (one for a loss) and a pass break-up. He dealt with an ankle issue in training camp, but that was his right ankle. He was grabbing his left ankle on this play.
The upside to this is if they knew something was broken right off the bat, they would probably have ruled him out. This does not preclude a significant injury, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed. In the meantime, Ray-Ray Armstrong has replaced Foster in the starting lineup next to NaVorro Bowman. Brock Coyle is the only other reserve linebacker.
