David Johnson might miss 49ers-Cardinals with wrist injury

The Cardinals running back could miss anywhere from two weeks to several months.

The NFL is still finishing up Week 1, and we already have a host of major injuries around the league. The San Francisco 49ers have lost Reuben Foster to a potential high ankle sprain, and when they travel to face the Arizona Cardinals in week 4, they might not face running back David Johnson.

Johnson suffered a wrist injury in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions, and his status moving forward is unclear. Initially there were thoughts he might be able to play in Week 2, but now there are suggestions he might end up on injured reserve with the return designation.

The very short end of this would seem to be at least a couple weeks. That could get Johnson back in time for the 49ers game, but given how reports are developing, my guess is he won’t be playing in that game.

Kerwynn Williams replaced Johnson at running back, with Andre Ellington getting targeted three times in the passing game. Whatever time Johnson misses, Williams and Ellington would likely offer a platoon in his place.
