The San Francisco 49ers will not be facing running back David Johnson this season if Adam Schefter’s latest report holds up. Schefter tweeted that Johnson will have wrist surgery this week, and is expected to miss two-to-three months while he recovers.
The 49ers travel to Arizona in Week 5 (October 8) and host the Cardinals in Week 9 (November 5). Schefter is reporting the Cardinals are putting Johnson on injured reserve with the potential return designation. That requires and eight week absence, which guarantees Johnson would not be back for the Week 9 matchup. I believe the earliest he could return is that following week.
Kerwynn Williams got the carries after Johnson got hurt, while Andre Ellington handled more of the passing down work. I suspect that split will remain the same for the time being. Williams finished Sunday with five carries for ten yards, and one reception (his only target) for two yards. Ellington did not have a rushing attempt, but did get targeted three times in the passing game, finishing with two receptions for 35 yards.
