The San Francisco 49ers took one on the chin Sunday afternoon, losing 23-3 in their Week 1 matchup with the Carolina Panthers. There has been optimism about the 49ers, but record expectations were still relatively low heading into Week 1. Some would suggest they think this team could go .500, but I think for most people, six or seven wins was the high end of optimism.
The 49ers head back to the drawing board, and it is no surprise their playoff odds are low. During the season, Football Outsiders puts together a look at playoff odds and high draft picks odds each week. The 49ers currently have the third worst playoff odds, at 6.9 percent. They are just ahead of the New York Jets (6.2 percent) and the Cleveland Browns (5.6 percent).
It is also worth noting the 49ers odds for a high draft pick are in good position. The 49ers currently have the fourth best odds of claiming the No. 1 overall pick, and the fourth best odds of claiming a pick in the top five of the 2018 NFL Draft. Here are the full odds
1. New York Jets (14.7%, 50.2%)
2. Cleveland Browns (12.6%, 45.9%)
3. Indianapolis Colts (12.6%, 44.9%)
4. San Francisco 49ers (11.6%, 44.2%)
5. Houston Texans (7.6%, 34.7%)
The Jets did not look the worst of these teams in Week 1, but they still seem to be the team most likely to find themselves in the No. 1 spot when the end of the season arrives. The Colts will depend a lot on if Andrew Luck returns. As for the Texans? Their defense should be fine, but they are going with a rookie quarterback in DeShaun Watson. Who knows how that might shake out.
