Reuben Foster injury removed him from PFF’s top Rookie of the Year candidates list

New, comments

It’s a week-to-week post, so Foster could reappear, but it will be tough if he misses multiple games.

NFL: San Francisco 49ers at Minnesota Vikings Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

The folks over at Pro Football Focus have put together a list of their top NFL Rookie of the Year candidates and there’s one huge difference from their first one: San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster isn’t there.

In a May ranking of the top offensive and defensive candidates, Foster was listed second of three defensive players, behind safety Malik Hooker of the Indianapolis Colts and ahead of Philadelphia Eagles edge rusher Derek Barnett.

Now they list a slew of players, including Buffalo Bills cornerback Tre’davious White, Pittsburgh Steelers edge rusher T.J. Watt, New York Giants defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson and quite a few more. Foster is no longer on the list.

Of his 11 snaps against the Carolina Panthers, I thought Foster looked good to great. He’s not appearing on this list due to his injury, so obviously the folks at Pro Football Focus expect that his rookie season has been seriously derailed. Given the nature of high ankle sprains and the varying recovery time, it’s certainly possible that’s the case.

Solomon Thomas, the top pick of the 49ers, hasn’t appeared on either list and didn’t draw rave reviews for his performance against the Panthers. I thought Thomas had plenty of issues in the game, and was unable to get any notable pressure. He shouldn’t be on this list, provided its an actual evolving week-to-week list, which they say this one is.

Hopefully he can pick it up going forward, and hopefully Foster comes back early enough to prove the doubters wrong.
