The San Francisco 49ers acquired guard Laken Tomlinson from the Detroit Lions near the end of training camp, and he might get his shot in the starting lineup sooner rather than later. Left guard Zane Beadles struggled considerably in Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers, and his hold on the job is tenuous at best.

On Wednesday, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Tomlinson would get more work this week than he did last week as he has grown more comfortable with the offense. It sounds like that work has accelerated this week. 49ers beat writer Cam Inman noted that Tomlinson was lining up with the first team offense during Thursday practice warmups.

During the regular season, the media is allowed to watch individual drills and warmups, but must depart when team drills start. We don’t know how things worked out once the team drills began, but this is at least a little bit interesting for the time being.

Shanahan will meet with the media Friday afternoon to close out the practice week. It’s safe to say he’ll get a question about the offensive line. I would expect him to say something along the lines of we’ll find out on Sunday, but maybe he surprises us.
