San Francisco 49ers safety Jaquiski Tartt had an up-and-down game against the Carolina Panthers in Week 1, and you can add an NFL fine to the latter category. Tartt was fined $9,115 for unnecessary roughness in the game, according to Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News.
Tartt was penalized 15 yards (and now fined) for a hit on a defenseless receiver against the Panthers. He’s not a serial offender so the fine is low for now. Tartt is known for an aggressive style of play, part of the reason many feel he’s a better strong safety than free safety.
He struggled against the Panthers overall, missing a couple big tackles — three by my count — and allowing a couple bad first downs. He did have an interception though, a very good interception. That doesn’t absolve him of his mistakes, but he remains a promising and productive member of the 49ers secondary and should see plenty of work this season.
He just needs to clean up his game a little, and avoid stupid penalties. Like this one.
