NCAA Football: Stanford at Southern California Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome to week 3 of college football! If the first two weeks told us anything we are once again in for a thrilling and unexpected season. While quarterbacks seem to be demanding most of the headlines early on this season we cannot forget the playmakers on defense. Today, we will take a look at some of the top corners in college football who will be draft-eligible next April.

The San Francisco 49ers search for a true number one corner will most likely continue heading into next season. Perhaps a player on the current roster will take the next step, such as Rashard Robinson or Dontae Johnson. However, I still believe the search will continue. In a pass-friendly NFL having a shutdown corner to defend against world-class receivers around the league is something on every team’s wish list. Let’s now explore some corners around the nation at the collegiate level who can help the 49ers in the not-so-distant future.

Top 5 Cornerbacks Featured

Iman Marshall - CB - #4 USC vs Texas - 8:30pm - Fox Network

NCAA Football: Stanford at Southern California Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

We start with the starting corner for the USC Trojans. Measuring in at 6’1” and 200 pounds, the junior brings a blend of speed and physicality to compete and battle against fast and lengthy opposing receivers. Made his starting debut last season with three interceptions, 8 deflections, and 51 total tackles. Marshall has great senses for the ball. Known as “Biggie” around college football, he uses his length and physicality to isolate his opponent, creating little to no windows for opposing quarterbacks to make a pass. Constantly has shown the ability to knock receivers off-balance.

Anthony Averett, CB - #1 Alabama vs Colorado State - 7pm - ESPN2

NCAA Football: Western Kentucky at Alabama Marvin Gentry-USA TODAY Sports

Averett is a corner with elite speed for the position. The 6’0” 183 pound corner is not the most physical of the bunch, however his straight-line speed and explosive ability offer him the ability to keep up with the fastest receivers. Plays strong in man-cover, and finishes his tackles cleanly. Works well in open space, and senses where the play is going to occur. I am looking to see this season if he can reel in some interceptions. Something he did very little of in previous seasons. Still though, 2017 will only be his second full season as a starter, and his arrow is only pointing up. Averett can be one of the biggest risers next spring on the big board.

Kevin Toliver II - CB - #12 LSU vs Mississipi State - 7pm - ESPN

NCAA Football: Florida at Louisiana State Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

The junior corner of the LSU Tigers has had a quiet start to his season missing the first game and not having a big impact in week 2. However, that shouldn't frighten evaluators. A starter from early as his freshmen season, the 6’2” 193 pound corner has the height and speed that scouts seek at the next level. Injuries and durability are a concern as they haunted him towards the beginning and end of his sophomore season. Toliver finishes his tackles, wrapping around his opponent, quickly bringing them to the ground. Has great sense for where the play is going to happen and puts himself in good positions to make a play.

Jaire Alexander - CB - #14 Louisville vs #3 Clemson - 8pm- ABC

NCAA Football: Louisville vs Purdue Jamie Rhodes-USA TODAY Sports

Playing in perhaps the game of the week Jaire Alexander of the Louisville Cardinals is another dynamic corner to keep a close tab on. The 5’11” 188 pound corner uses his speed and agility to keep up with receivers as he was credited with 5 interceptions and nine passes broken up last season. In addition to his abilities as a corner, keep a close eye on him on special teams as a punt returner. Last season he returned multiple punts to the house for six. This only adds value to Alexander as a pro prospect.

Carlton Davis - CB - #15 Auburn vs Mercer - 4pm - SEC Network

NCAA Football: Auburn at Clemson Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

One of the most physical and competitive corners in college football, Carlton Davis from Auburn plays a physical brand of football and plays one-to-one man coverage with the biggest wideouts. Can hang with the speedy receivers on deeper routes and will go the distance to break-up plays and work to knock the receiver off-balance. A starter since his freshmen season where he has had a productive career isolating receivers, and is credited with a total of 18 passes broken up 3 interceptions and 100 total tackles for his career thus far at Auburn.
