The San Francisco 49ers are 0-2 after losing to the Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks, which isn’t particularly surprising. Even if they weren’t facing the existential reality of their own inherent doomness, they aren’t a great team and were never expected to be a great team this season.
In fact, the 49ers may have actually exceeded expectations against the Seahawks on Sunday. You could, if you were the type of person who is even capable of this, be somewhat positive following that loss. The defensive front was much better at rushing the passer, which could have something to do with Seattle’s poor offensive line, but performing well where you’re expected to go well is always a plus.
So yeah, the doomsayer is feeling a little positive, though I do think the offense is far below expectations. Brian Hoyer was never supposed to be a great quarterback, but I did expect more from him through two weeks. Of course, he’s also been let down by drops and a bad offensive line.
Either way, the 49ers are doomed. You’re doomed and I’m doomed, but the 49ers are well and truly doomed. Perhaps the most-doomed of any team in the NFC West, in fact. Certainly, they’re more doomed than the Seahawks and at least as doomed as the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams.
Last week, we ran a Doom Index poll and, unlike the polls prior to the beginning of the regular season, things were overwhelmingly in favor of the “Most Doomed” option. Previously, folks had been somewhat positive, consistently voting for “Least” and “Kinda Doomed” options.
As always, you can find the past results in this Imgur gallery. How doomed are the 49ers after two games?
