Golden Nuggets: Passing Offense Still Struggling

NFL: San Francisco 49ers at Seattle Seahawks Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers went up to Seattle to take on their NFC West rivals, the Seahawks, and they were almost able to spring the upset. The defense played a great game and kept Russell Wilson and the Seahawks offense out of the end zone until the Seahawks’ last drive of the game. The 49ers lost 12-9 and have a short week with a Thursday night home game against NFC West rival L.A. Rams.

For a 2nd straight week, the 49ers offense could not score their 1st touchdown of the season. The passing offense was non-existent. Brian Hoyer could not throw over 100 yards for the game and continued his struggles throwing down field. He threw a pick to Bobby Wagner and it may be the easiest pick Wagner will ever have. Marquise Goodwin had another huge drop on an important drive following last week’s one. The positives for the offense was how much better the offensive line played after starting Laken Tomlinson in place of Zane Beadles. Carlos Hyde had a big game. He ran for 124 yards on 15 carries. He broke off a huge 61 yard run to set up the 49ers first field goal.

The defense was very impressive against Seattle. DeForest Buckner and the rest of the defensive line were able to get pressure on Russell most of the game. Aaron Lynch came back into the lineup and was able to record his 1st sack of the season. Arik Armstead and Tank Carradine also added sacks, but the defense was unable to sack Wilson on the TD throw to win the game. The Seahawks’ run game was able to run for over a 100 yards, but most of that came at the end of the game when the 49ers defense was gassed. The defense logged too many snaps and was unable to get off the field in Seattle’s last drive. Russell Wilson was able to make the play to spoil a superb 49ers defensive performance.
