Alex Smith’s reaction to Pat Mahomes’ touchdown should be familiar for 49ers fans

New, comments

Remember Alex Smith, 49ers fans? Remember how he left the team?

Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick were non-controversial, well-loved players that nobody here on Niners Nation ever said a bad word about when they were with the San Francisco 49ers. This is factual and there is no need to actually check on that or respond on the matter in the comments.

But neither are with the 49ers anymore. The former left after the latter took his job, and the latter sparked an important national conversation that ultimately caused him to be ostracized by stupid people in charge. But we’re going to focus on Smith losing his job and ending up with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Smith suffered a concussion in the middle of a huge career resurgence and lost his job when Kaepernick played exceedingly well in his absence. Back when that happened, a popular video clip was passed around of Smith’s reaction to a Kaepernick touchdown, which seemed to show him less than enthusiastic about his teammate’s success.

Now, you should never put that much stock into a three-second clip of somebody reacting to something, especially when so much is actually happening on the sidelines of a three-hour long football game.

But now there’s a clip of Smith reacting to a strong performance from Patrick Mahomes, and everyone is drawing comparisons.

Over at the main SB Nation site, Matt Ufford took a look at the two gifs and the comparison between them. He also noted the same caution I did above, and called the Jim Harbaugh era “a glitch in NFL reality now known as the Harbaugh Epoch,” so I kind of love it.

As an aside, Alex Smith is probably the nicest person I’ve ever met in my life, so if I was mean here, that should be known.
