49ers have at least 17 more roster cuts to make before Saturday deadline

New, comments

One player appears headed for injures reserve, so 17 more cuts are needed to reach 53 men on the roster.

The San Francisco 49ers made their first wave of roster cuts on Friday, and more will come on Saturday prior to the 1 p.m. PT deadline. Seventeen players were released or waived/injured on Friday, with the biggest names being running back Tim Hightower and quarterback Matt Barkley.

With Kapri Bibbs also on that list, it could mean the 49ers have a set depth chart at the running back position, and of course, the release of Barkley means rookie C.J. Beathard is likely the primary backup for Brian Hoyer.

With those 17 moves, the 49ers now have another 18 moves to make before the roster deadline on Saturday. They have to get down to 53 players, and then will begin building their practice squad.

If it turns out that Don Jones does, in fact, have a torn ACL, then he will also be waived/injured, leaving 17 more roster moves to make. As many have pointed out, there will likely be many veteran cuts on Saturday, and the 49ers will surely try and trade one or two them before they have to make that decision.

Below, we have the full list of cuts from Friday. Who is going to be next? Looking at Fooch’s last 53-man roster projection, only Barkley was among those released who were on his final prediction. Aaron Lynch is the most notable player Fooch has left off who is still up in the air.
