The 49ers are going with new additions on the defensive line.

The San Francisco 49ers have release defensive lineman Quinton Dial, according to a league source. Matt Maiocco and Cam Inman are reporting this as well. The 49ers are in the process of finalizing their roster cuts, and have 18 decisions to make by 1 p.m. PT on Saturday. Here is our full list of roster cutdown transactions.

The decision to release Dial is not entirely surprising. He has been a very solid presence on the line, showing tremendous versatility. And yet it became clear this offseason that the 49ers were looking to make changes to the line. They signed Earl Mitchell and then drafted D.J. Jones in the sixth round. With DeForest Buckner locked in to one of the two interior line positions, that foreclosed an opportunity for Dial.

The 49ers interior defensive line will include Buckner and Mitchell in the base, with Arik Armstead and Solomon Thomas getting work in there when they move into their sub-packages. We are still awaiting word on names like D.J. Jones and Chris Jones. My guess is the former Jones makes it and the latter Jones is cut.
