It appears one of the San Francisco 49ers most productive offensive players this preseason will be sticking around. NFL agent Brett Tessler tweeted on Saturday that all indications are that running back Raheem Mostert has made the roster.
In related news, Joe Williams is headed to injured reserve, according to Tom Pelissero. Williams injured his ankle in the team’s preseason finale. Placing him on IR today instead of tomorrow means he cannot return this season. Given his struggles holding onto the ball, this could very well be a way for the team to stash him for the year.
Mostert joined the 49ers last season, first on the practice squad, and then on the 53-man roster as running back injuries mounted. Mostert entered the NFL as a UDFA in 2015, and the 49ers are his seventh team. He has spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles, Miami Dolphins, Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, and Chicago Bears.
During those two seasons he appeared in 14 games, primarily as a kick returner. He has gotten return work with the 49ers this preseason, but he made his impact out of the backfield, both as a runner and pass catcher. He was clocked running a 4.38 40 at the Purdue Pro Day, and it’s safe to say Kyle Shanahan will find ways to use him.
