Joshua Garnett placed on season-ending IR, Ronald Blair expected to get IR with return designation

The 49ers injured reserve list is growing.

NFL: New York Jets at San Francisco 49ers Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers cut down their roster to 53 players on Saturday, and it included quite a few injury related moves. The 49ers placed five players on injured reserve, and likely will add a sixth on Sunday.

The five players placed on IR Saturday afternoon included RB Joe Williams, S Don Jones, Aaron Burbridge, OG Joshua Garnett, and DT Chris Jones. All five are officially done for the season because of their Saturday placement. It is disappointing to see Garnett lose out his second NFL season, and his status beyond this year is up in the air. Garnett appeared to have one of the guard jobs locked up, but he’ll likely face improved competition next year.

Matt Maiocco reported earlier in the day that defensive lineman Ronald Blair was expected to be placed on IR on Sunday, with a chance to return later in the season. If the 49ers had placed him on IR on Saturday, they would not have been able to return him.

The 49ers likely will find some options to claim from waivers, and this will open up a roster spot. Here is what the team’s injured reserve currently looks like.

RB Joe Williams
WR Aaron Burbridge
WR BJ Johnson III
OG Joshua Garnett
DT Chris Jones
LB Donavin Newsom
LB Jimmie Gilbert
LB Malcolm Smith
S Chanceller James
