The San Francisco 49ers have a short week to take part in the farcical act known as Thursday Night Football. I like having football to watch in the middle of the week, but it’s a terrible system for the players, coaches and everyone involved in the actual playing of football. But it’s going to happen either way, and the Los Angeles Rams are coming to town.
Against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2, the 49ers had defensive end Aaron Lynch and safety Jimmie Ward active, a change from Week 1 when the former was a healthy scratch and the latter was dealing with a hamstring injury. They also swapped Victor Bolden and Kendrick Bourne, and made Lorenzo Jerome a last-minute inactive.
Going into the Rams game, we already know that Eric Reid (PCL) and Reuben Foster (high ankle sprain) are ruled out, so that’s two inactive players right off the bat. But who will join them on the inactives list?
The full list of inactives against the Seahawks included Foster, Jerome, Bourne, OL Erik Magnuson, DT Xavier Cooper, LB Pita Taumoepenu and CB Ahkello Witherspoon.
To be honest, I’m a little surprised that Witherspoon isn’t getting some playing time, but for the time being, the 49ers are getting decent play out of their cornerbacks, and have more to worry about in regards to safety and defensive line depth.
I thought Aaron Lynch looked good against the Seahawks, and I think his pass-rushing skill is still needed. I expect him to be active, and I see no way the 49ers can work Cooper or Taumoepenu onto the field. Magnuson is an interesting player, especially as Laken Tomlinson continues to grow and Zane Beadles continues to sit on the sidelines.
I expect Jerome will be active due to Reid’s injury and the fact that both Ward (hamstring) and Jaquiski Tartt (neck) are dealing with injuries themselves. I’d guess both Jerome and Adrian Colbert are active, with the 49ers sticking with Bolden over Bourne, especially with Trent Taylor being middling thus far and Marquise Goodwin struggling.
Who are your inactives for Thursday?
