In addition to DeForest Buckner playing well, which we’ve already talked about, the San Francisco 49ers got some pretty solid performances in their game against the Los Angeles Rams. Notably, Brian Hoyer had his best game in San Francisco, while wide receiver Pierre Garcon proved he is still a No. 1 receiver.
All three of those players were graded highly by the folks over at Pro Football Focus in the initial recap of Thursday’s game. Buckner (88.9), Garcon (88.1) and Hoyer (87.7) were their three highest-graded players.
In their weekly recap, they list their top five from each team, so left tackle Joe Staley (85.5) and wide receiver Marquise Goodwin (80.6) also received call-outs for their play.
Right tackle Trent Brown has been the player they’ve talked about most on the offensive line, but I thought he struggled against Aaron Donald and in general against the Rams, unfortunately. Staley had a nice game and, according to PFF, did not allow a quarterback pressure.
They listed some key stats for Hoyer that are also pretty interesting. Hoyer went 8-for-9 with 152 yards and two touchdowns on play-action throws (a perfect passer rating of 158.3). He also completed eight of 11 passes for 239 yards on throws of 10-plus yards downfield.
Garcon caught seven of 10 passes thrown his way for 142 yards, and Hoyer had a passer rating of 112.5 when targeting Garcon. He had that 59-yard reception against Trumaine Johnson and, of course, the toe-tapping sideline pass that Fooch already wrote about. Goodwin caught two passes for 62 yards.
