49ers-Cardinals: Should Solomon Thomas or Aaron Lynch get more playing time?

New, comments

With Tank Carradine injured, there will be plenty of snaps to go around for the other defensive ends on the roster.

The Arizona Cardinals are a team that, in recent years, have established a clear blueprint for their own defeat: allow Carson Palmer to get hit a lot, and the game is a stinker. Through three games this season, Palmer has actually looked pretty good in the face of defensive pressure, but he’s shown that he can’t hold up over the course of a full season behind that offensive line.

The San Francisco 49ers are a team that has had one impressive pass-rushing experience, against the Seattle Seahawks and their porous offensive line. The Cardinals have a similarly poor offensive line, and if the 49ers don’t produce any sacks, it will be a disappointment.

That goes for everyone involved. With Tank Carradine out, it means an even bigger spotlight will be on Solomon Thomas, who the 49ers really want to get in the sack column. DeForest Buckner has been dominant as well, but he hasn’t produced sacks, and that’s what the 49ers want.

Aaron Lynch is a player I’ll keep mentioning because I think he’s an excellent pass-rusher who has alienated this coaching staff for whatever reason. Maybe Lynch isn’t as good as I’m thinking and the 49ers are correct in limiting his snaps, but I think with Carradine out, Lynch should see his snaps doubled at the very least.

Give him time to build up some steam and see if it results in some big numbers. The secondary will need it with Larry Fitzgerald and J.J. Nelson to contend with.

Thomas hasn’t looked nearly as good as Lynch in limited time. I understand why the 49ers want to see what they have in Thomas, a first-round pick, but I think there’s plenty of room for both to see the field. I have to wonder if that’s the plan: to see which one performs better on Sunday.

What do you guys think? Do you want to see more Thomas or Lynch?
