The San Francisco 49ers cut down to the 53-man roster on Saturday, and they only lost one of the players to waivers. The Minnesota Vikings claimed tight end Blake Bell to provide some depth behind Kyle Rudolph. The remaining 49ers cuts that went through waivers cleared.
The 49ers claimed defensive end Xavier Cooper from the Cleveland Browns. That was their only waiver claim today. The 49ers had No. 2 waiver priority, so they got first dibs on any Browns releases. Cleveland claimed five players, so naturally we’re left to speculate if the 49ers placed a claim on any of them.

The players that cleared waivers are now unrestricted free agents. They could land a job elsewhere, but several will likely end up on the 49ers practice squad. Early reports have offensive lineman Darrell Williams, defensive lineman Noble Nwachukwu, and quarterback Nick Mullens joining the 49ers practice squad. We are tracking the 49ers signings in our practice squad tracker.
From the list below, some potential practice squad candidates include tight end Cole Hikutini and offensive lineman J.P. Flynn. I wouldn’t mind seeing the team hold on to wide receiver Tim Patrick. They claimed him off waivers on July 31, when the Baltimore Ravens released him. Patrick is 6’4 212 pounds, and considering you can’t teach that kind of size, I’d love to see him get some development time on the practice squad.
