The Indianapolis Colts activated quarterback Andrew Luck off the PUP list this weekend, but he will not be ready to start when Week 1 arrives this Sunday. The team acquired Jacoby Brissett over the weekend in a trade with the New England Patriots, but it will be Scott Tolzien getting the start this weekend when the Colts face the Los Angeles Rams.

In case you’re wondering, yes, that is the same Scott Tolzien who spent two seasons as the San Francisco 49ers third string quarterback. Tolzien entered the NFL as a UDFA, signing with the San Diego Chargers. After a big performance against the 49ers in the preseason, San Diego waived him as part of their final roster cuts. The 49ers claimed him, and he spent the next two seasons behind Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick. The 49ers waived him during 2013 training camp. He spent some time in Green Bay before signing a two-year deal with Indianapolis prior to last season.

Andrew Luck is coming off shoulder surgery, and his return has been a mystery. He spent all of the preseason on the PUP list, but the team’s activation of him means he will be available to return at any point in the next few weeks. The 49ers travel to face the Colts in Week 5. I would assume Luck will be back by then, but how far before then remains to be seen. In the meantime, Tolzien will get a chance to hold down the starting job.
