The 49ers tight ends could be short-handed this weekend.

The San Francisco 49ers injury report will include some prominent players this week as they prepare for the Carolina Panthers. Kyle Shanahan told the media on Wednesday that tight end George Kittle will be limited in practice due to a hamstring injury. He suffered the injury during training camp, and this is an aggravation of that injury.

The 49ers tight end depth chart currently includes Kittle, Logan Paulsen, and Garrett Celek. We don’t know Kittle’s availability for Sunday, and hamstring injuries can flair up at any moment. It makes sense to play it safe.

Cole Hikutini is on the practice squad, and could be promoted this weekend if Kittle is going to be inactive. If that happened, Hikutini would return to the practice squad once Kittle was healthy. That would require him clearing waivers once again, as he did after final roster cuts over the weekend. The 49ers have two more days of practice for Kittle to get on track for Sunday.
