Fooch’s update No. 2: National reports have Vance Joseph returning as Broncos head coach.
Fooch’s update: Adam Schefter is reporting Bruce Arians is expected to retire from coaching!
The 2017 NFL regular season has come to an end, and for the San Francisco 49ers, that means transitioning further into draft and free agency preparations. For the first time since the end of the 2013 season, they are not going to have to hire a new head coach or general manager!
Black Monday is upon us, and for 49ers fans, it is a chance to play the observer rather than the participant. The New York Giants got the early jump when they fired Ben McAdoo in December, and four other teams have joined in. The Chicago Bears have fired John Fox, the Detroit Lions have fired Jim Caldwell, the Indianapolis Colts have fired Chuck Pagano, and Jack Del Rio is saying the Oakland Raiders have fired him.
There will likely be one or two more firings, but we have to wait and see how those play out. We’ll continue updating those here. In the meantime, teams are going to begin the process of finding their next head coach. There is already plenty of speculation
Detroit Lions: Most national media expect New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia to be the early front-runner.
Oakland Raiders: ESPN reported over the weekend that Mark Davis was prepared to make a huge run at Jon Gruden. So it begins!
Chicago Bears: I don’t know if Vic Fangio has a shot, but if he doesn’t, plenty of teams will look to hire him as a defensive coordinator.
New York Giants: Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz is rumored to be the front-runner.
Jim Harbaugh: The Bears and Colts have openings, and the Michigan head coach has plenty of connections to both. I don’t see it happening this year, but never say never, right?
