Who is your vote for 49ers rookie of the year?

New, comments

The 49ers certainly got a lot out of the 2017 rookie class.

The San Francisco 49ers will not get a lot of end-of-season awards, but that won’t stop us from considering internal awards. I thought we’d open with a look at the rookie class, and who emerged as the rookie of the year.

The 49ers had an extensive group of rookies contribute this year. They had ten draft picks, and 18 UDFA signings right after the draft. From the draft picks, nine made at least one appearance, with seven getting some kind of starting role at one point or another. From the UDFAs, six appear in some kind of game action.

The full list of notable rookies that made appearances and are still on the roster incude

QB CJ Beathard
RB Matt Breida
WR Trent Taylor
WR Victor Bolden
WR Kendrick Bourne
TE George Kittle
TE Cole Hikutini
OL Erik Magnuson
OL Darrell Williams

DL Solomon Thomas
ILB Reuben Foster
CB Ahkello Witherspoon
FS Adrian Colbert

Colbert won the team’s Thomas Herrion Award, which goes to the rookie or first-year player, “who has taken advantage of every opportunity, turned it into a positive situation and made their dream turn into a reality.” The 49ers invested a seventh round pick in Colbert, and he turned into the team’s starting free safety.

Who would be your choice for rookie of the year?

  • Reuben Foster appeared to be the most talented of the class, but he also missed six games, and most of a seventh.
  • Solomon Thomas offered some solid return primarily in run defense, but was unable to maintain consistency in getting after the quarterback.
  • Ahkello Witherspoon seemed like he would end up spending his rookie season inactive. However, by Week 8, he gained a starting job he would not relinquish.
  • Adrian Colbert looked like primarily a special teams player coming out of the draft, but mounting injuries provided him with an opportunity at free safety. He took advantage of that opportunity and suddenly the 2018 competition at free and strong safety will be a fascinating one.
  • George Kittle and Trent Taylor emerged as strong receiving options. They finished tied with 43 receptions, although it felt like Taylor made the bigger impact as a third down weapon.
  • C.J. Beathard took a beating after replacing Brian Hoyer, but showed he could be a very capable backup quarterback in this league.
  • Matt Breida did not supplant Carlos Hyde entirely, but he gained the coaching staff’s trust fairly quickly.
