The 49ers lost their assistant head coach and linebackers coach just a week after hiring him. Ken Norton Jr was hired last week, but he is leaving the team to take the vacant defensive coordinator position with the Seattle Seahawks. Ken was with the Seahawks for 5 years as a linebacker coach before taking the defensive coordinator spot in 2015. He was fired by the Raiders in November.
Ken Norton Jr was brought in because he had worked with Robert Saleh in Seattle, but also to help mentor Reuben Foster. Reuben was arrested last week in Alabama for marijuana possession. Reuben could miss some games and the hope was that Norton Jr would help Reuben excel at linebacker and keep him out of trouble. Reuben had off the field issues that made him drop in the draft. His play this past season was spectacular and the 49ers need him to be on the field to have an impact.
While Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers work on a long-term deal, Jimmy is still earning money from the New England Patriots. With the Patriots win on Saturday, Jimmy earned a $51,000 bonus. Defensive end Cassius Marsh also earns the bonus from the Patriots and their 49ers teammate Sheldon Day earned a bonus from the Jaguars’ trip to the conference final. All 3 could earn more if their former teams make it to the Super Bowl.
