The 49ers need edge rusher help, and Bradley Chubb would certainly provide that.

The San Francisco 49ers have a big need for edge rushers, and the latest 2018 NFL mock draft from Pro Football Focus offers an intriguing name. In a bit of a surprise, Steve Palazzolo has the 49ers landing N.C. State edge rusher Bradley Chubb at No. 9. Here’s what he had to say about the pick:

The defensive line has been a consistent theme to recent 49ers’ first rounds, but Chubb brings a different dynamic to the table. He finished No. 6 overall among edge defenders at 89.4, including the No. 3 mark against the run and the No. 11 grade as a pass-rusher.

Chubb finished the 2017 season with 72 total tackles (23 for a loss) and 10 sacks. It was his second straight season with ten sacks. ESPN’s Mel Kiper had Chubb going No. 3 in his first mock draft of the year. He chatted with the media on Thursday, and described Chubb as an elite edge rusher who might be the best player in the draft.

“You could make the argument [Chubb] is the best player in the draft,” Kiper said. “He’s not that far off from being the No. 1 guy in the draft. He had two great years back-to-back. He’s got a great attitude, great approach. He’s not the elite talent that [2017 No. 1 overall draft pick] Myles Garrett is, but he’s more consistent and more on a daily basis gave you everything he had against the run and the pass. He chased down plays. He’s not Myles Garrett, but he’s close enough to say, ‘Hey, he could be the No. 1 player on anybody’s board.’”

I still think the right cornerback makes a lot of sense here, but if you can find an elite edge rusher, that can be a big help for your secondary.

That being said, will he drop to the 49ers? PFF’s top eight before them went as follows:

1. Cleveland Browns - Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma
2. New York Giants - Sam Darnold, QB, USC
3. Indianapolis Colts - Maurice Hurst, DT, Michigan
4. Cleveland Browns - Minkah Fitzpatrick, DB, Alabama
5. Denver Broncos - Josh Rosen, QB, UCLA
6. New York Jets - Lamar Jackson, QB, Louisville
7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Derwin James, S, Florida State
8. Chicago Bears - Connor Williams, OT, Texas

Maurice Hurst and Derwin James are the two names that spring Chubb down the draft board. Baker Mayfield at No. 1 is a bit unexpected, but we can be pretty certain a quarterback is going No. 1. Additionally, all the teams picking quarterbacks in the top eight of this mock are teams that need a quarterback.

There will be some kind of surprise in the top ten, and that very well could spring some intriguing talent down to the 49ers at No. 9/10.
