Bill Barnwell has a tough time predicting 49ers 2018 Vegas win total

New, comments

The 49ers went undefeated with Jimmy Garoppolo starting in 2017. That could make for an intriguing number in Las Vegas for 2018.

The San Francisco 49ers closed out the 2017 season in strong fashion, winning five straight after Jimmy Garoppolo was inserted into the starting lineup. Optimism is riding high at the moment, and there is a decent chance it will be reflected in win totals Vegas will release later this spring.

Win totals are usually not released until after the schedule is officially released in April. In the meantime, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell decided to predict what NFL win totals would be in Las Vegas, along with the potential payouts. You can pick over or under on win totals, but the “favored” one will pay out less money.

Barnwell pegged the 49ers at 7.5 wins, with the OVER payout set at -130, and the UNDER payout set at +110. That means if you bet OVER, you have to bet $130 to win $100. If you bet UNDER, you win $110 if you bet $100. Here’s what he had to say in settled on these figures.

And this was the toughest number to peg, if only because the Niners looked like a totally different animal while going 5-0 under Jimmy Garoppolo. Kyle Shanahan’s team isn’t going to go undefeated in 2018 with its new quarterback, but the 49ers are going to return Jimmy GQ and a defense with as many as six first-round picks. And they should have something in the range of $100 million to work with in free agency. They could get good in a hurry. San Francisco also is in a tough division, and the NFC West has to face off against the NFC North and AFC West next year. The Niners’ road schedule includes six teams that were .500 or better this past season, along with a game at Lambeau Field against the Packers.

Here’s a full list of the 49ers opponents in 2018.

Home: Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, New York Giants, Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams, Seattle Seahawks

Away: Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, Los Angeles Chargers, Kansas City Chiefs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams, Seattle Seahawks

Naturally, I would be inclined to take the OVER on the 49ers win total. That being said, I could see this number coming in higher when totals are released in April. We’ll know how the 49ers have spent their free agent budget. If they have made some big moves (hypothetical: signing WR Allen Robinson and CB Trumaine Johnson), I could see a higher number. If they’re a little more conservative, maybe not.

However it plays out, it’s going to be fascinating to see how Las Vegas, the sharp bettors, and the more general betting public all handle the San Francisco 49ers in 2018.
