What Jets needs could impact 49ers in the NFL Draft?

New, comments

The Jets have the sixth overall pick in the NFL Draft. Do the 49ers need to worry about losing a big need to them?

There are at least seven teams and eight picks before the San Francisco 49ers get around to making a pick in the 2018 NFL Draft (potentially more if they lose the coin flip against the Oakland Raiders), and we’re going to go through those teams, looking at their needs and how they can impact the 49ers on draft day.

Today, we’re taking a look at the New York Jets, who finished the season with a 5-11 record, putting them in line for the sixth overall pick in the draft.

New York Jets (5-11)
Biggest need: QB
Need that impact 49ers: EDGE
Other needs: OT, LB, RB

Josh McCown played better than anybody expected in 2017, but he wasn’t necessarily great by any stretch. He completed 267 of 397 passes for 2,926 yards with 18 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also fumbled the ball a whopping 11 times, and anybody who thinks the Jets can go another offseason without addressing the quarterback position is fooling themselves.

Christian Hackenberg couldn’t even get snaps after the Jets were well out of contention, and Bryce Petty was miserable, completing 49.1 percent of his passes with a touchdown and three interceptions.

Fortunately, the 49ers don’t have a need at quarterback thanks to Jimmy Garoppolo. What they do have that could overlap with the 49ers is an edge rusher. The Jets have ignored the position for years and they were awful at getting to opposing quarterbacks. They had just 28 sacks and, according to Pro Football Focus, nobody on the team had more than 30 pressures on the year.

The 49ers have spent many first-round picks on the defensive line, but they desperately need somebody who is better at getting to the passer. I’m not certain that Solomon Thomas is going to be a huge pass-rushing threat, his arsenal of moves seem iffy at best. He definitely will get more time and snaps to prove me wrong, but with key free agents set to hit the market, the 49ers need to add.

In addition to edge, the Jets could use some help at pass-rushing linebacker. Demario Davis is set to be a free agent, and they need to re-sign him. If they don’t, the need at linebacker gets even bigger.

And, of course, we can’t do one of these posts without mentioning Saquon Barkley, a running back who may or may not still be there when the Jets pick. With Matt Forte getting up there in years, the Jets would consider taking him, though he’ll probably be gone by that point.
