Baker Mayfield has unimpressive first day, but room for improvement

New, comments

Mayfield wasn't terrible but he showed some growing pains on the first day of practice.

Oklahoma Sooners Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Baker Mayfield is one of the most talked about prospects at the Senior Bowl. His every move has been noted and evaluated. He arrived late in Mobile, Alabama for the Senior Bowl because of a family matter and missed weigh ins and measurements. He did, however, practice with the North team in the afternoon for their first practice of the week.

While Mike Mayock and Charles Davis had glowing compliments for Mayfield and his fundamentals, the quarterback had a rough day. Several throws were wildly inaccurate, some hitting the turf near the receivers feet. Other times it seemed like they weren’t always on the same page. He even had a bad exchange with his center that caused a fumble in the middle of practice.

It is important to note that this was the first day of practice in a new system with new personnel for everyone. Mayfield was sent the playbook ahead of time so he could study it, as opposed to getting it when he arrived. Most players had time to look them over since their arrival, and talked to coaches about them in their team meetings.

While it could be seen as a negative for Mayfield to have a challenging first day, how he reacts to it will be key. How he responds to adversity is what coaches and scouts will be looking for. He has a long week of practice and a game at the end of the week where he can show what he is capable of. His turn around could make his draft stock rise tremendously.

The competition is significant for the top pick in the draft, with the Cleveland Browns expected by most to draft a quarterback. The New York Giants are a strong bet to draft a quarterback at No. 2, and the Denver Broncos and New York Jets could look quarterback at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. Mayfield has a strong chance of going in that group, and his competition with Josh Allen in North practices this week will be something to watch.
