John Lynch: ‘I think [re-signing Jimmy Garoppolo] makes too much sense not to happen.’

New, comments

The 49ers GM wants this bad.

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch is on hand for the 2018 Senior Bowl, and it is no surprise NFL Network snagged him for an interview. Even less surprising was that he got a question about quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. You can view some video below, but here is a transcript of what he had to say:

“When you find the right guy at that position, it’s really good for your franchise. We believe we found the right guy. Now the challenge is getting Jimmy signed. We’re working hard toward that. We’ll see. I think he wants to be with us, and we want him there. I think it makes too much sense not to happen. So, it’s just a matter of getting it done.”

Since Garoppolo stepped into the starting lineup and wow’d us all, Lynch has not hidden his desire to re-sign him. The quarterback position is the most important on the field, and finding a guy you know you can lock in for the next 5-10 years really cannot be overvalued.

The 49ers can use the franchise tag on Garoppolo, with a decision required by March 6. That could net Garoppolo upwards of $24 million in a fully guaranteed one-year contract. Consecutive years of the franchise tag could net him north of $50 million in fully guaranteed money. That helps give us an idea of a baseline where negotiations might start (or have started, depending on what has happened thus far).
