The San Francisco 49ers five game win streak to close out the season moved them down the draft board, and it also may have cost them a shot at coaching one of the two Senior Bowl rosters. The Senior Bowl staff selects two NFL coaching staffs each year, and this year they have selected the Houston Texans’ and Denver Broncos’ coaching staffs, according to Denver 9News reporter Mike Klis.
The Senior Bowl can offer the opportunity to anybody, although teams with new coaching staffs usually don’t coach the game. When the 49ers were looking at a top five pick, it seemed logical they would end up coaching the game. In winning five straight to close the season, that appears to have foreclosed that opportunity.
It’s certainly not the end of the world, particularly given that every year 30 teams don’t get the opportunity to coach Senior Bowl participants. The 49ers will still send a full contingent of scouts, coaches, and executive. It would have been nice to see the coaching staff get one-on-one time with a boatload of prospects, but, such is life.
In the meantime, here is a full rundown of players participating in the 2018 Senior Bowl.
