Kirk Cousins could still end up on the same field as the 49ers in 2018

New, comments

A lot has to occur to make this happen, but this would not surprise me.

Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins remains in limbo thanks to his contract status, and rumors are flying every which way. Washington could choose to franchise him for a third straight year, but a trade or the transition tag resulting in his departure both seem possible.

Cousins was prominently connected to the San Francisco 49ers for much of the past year, dating back to Kyle Shanahan signing on as head coach. The chatter slowed down when the season got going, and it came to a screeching halt when the 49ers acquired Jimmy Garoppolo in a trade.

But now a new potential destination has emerged. The Denver Broncos have been connected to Cousins this offseason, and during the Senior Bowl, often well-connected Eric Galko of Optimum Scouting reported that it is looking more likely than not that Cousins is playing for the Broncos this fall.

There is a long way to go to get this sorted out. The franchise and transition tags are both in play, with the latter making a departure more likely. We heard a lot about Cousins’ future when the 49ers were mentioned frequently, but things have quieted down with their removal from the picture.

But maybe we do see him on the field at Levi’s Stadium this fall — albeit in a Broncos uniform.
