How much talent will the quarterbacks push down?

New, comments

The 49ers sit at No. 9 or 10 in the draft order. With potentially four quarterbacks going in the top eight, it will push down some intriguing talent.

The San Francisco 49ers draft position is not yet fully settled due to their tie with the Oakland Raiders, but we have a pretty good idea of where things stand. They will pick either No. 9 or No. 10 in the first round, and then rotate with the Raiders and Miami Dolphins in later rounds (since all three finished 6-10).

In the meantime, now that the regular season is over, the folks at Draft Wire are back with their latest four-round mock draft. The 2018 NFL Draft is still nearly four months away, but while we have not even yet finished up the college football playoff, that shouldn’t stop us from speculating on what positions and players the 49ers might consider with their draft picks.

Draft Wire ran through all four rounds, which netted the 49ers a potential impact player in the pass rush, a depth option at cornerback, another couple weapons for Jimmy Garoppolo, and some more protection on the offensive line. Here are the five picks the 49ers land in this mock draft.

1 (9). Harold Landry, Edge, Boston college
2 (58). Dante Pettis, WR, Washington
3 (72). Mason Cole, OL, Michigan
3 (73). Quenton Meeks, CB, Stanford
4 (125). Mark Walton, RB, Miami (FL)

If the 49ers were picking second or third, the first round pick might be easier to assess. At the end of the top ten, it quickly gets a little more difficult. In this mock draft, Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold, and Baker Mayfield all get drafted. There is some thought that Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson could end up in there as well.

Aside from the three quarterbacks, edge rusher Bradley Chubb, defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick, running back Saquon Barkley, guard Quenton Nelson, and edge rusher Arden Key all are drafted. Landry is an intriguing prospect to boost the pass rush, but if one more quarterback can go in the top eight picks, it opens the door for one more of the above names to be available. And if a fourth quarterback does not go before the 49ers, that opens the door for a trade down. All sorts of intrigue could be afoot!
