Underclassmen have until January 15 to declare for the 2018 NFL Draft, but it would appear the players likely to go in the first round are all declared. Two days after Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen declared for the draft, Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson has announced his plans to enter the draft.
The news is not surprising. Jackson put together a second straight monster season, throwing for 3,660 yards and rushing for 1,601 yards. He finished with 45 combined touchdowns and is the kind of playmaker that will entice somebody in the first round. Some have suggested he should convert to wide receiver or running back, but a creative coach could do some big things with him.
The first round quarterback class could include Jackson, Darnold, Rosen, Josh Allen, and Baker Mayfield. We could see four of them going in the top eight, but the next three months will impact this plenty. The 49ers don’t need a quarterback, but if one slips down to them, a trade becomes a possibility. And if four go in the top eight, that guarantees particularly solid talent is going to slip down to them.
