Jalen Ramsey was a superstar against the Bills

The 49ers sure could use a No. 1 cornerback.

NFL: AFC Wild Card-Buffalo Bills at Jacksonville Jaguars Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Jacksonville Jaguars have some great player, but the best one is Jalen Ramsey, a cornerback. He was absolutely on point in the team’s wild card win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. He was also the player who sealed the game with a huge play as the Bills were trying to drive and make a comeback in the final moments.

He is a star, and he shined his brightest in his first ever playoff appearance. He’s the kind of player that every defensive coordinator desperately wants on his team, and the kind of player the San Francisco 49ers have been lacking for a very long time.

Following the game, this gem from Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee popped up on my timeline, and it’s exactly what I’m thinking about where the 49ers are going. Cornerback should be the top priority above all else right now, with quarterback secured by Jimmy Garoppolo.

Dontae Johnson was awful down the stretch — there’s really no nice way to say it. He’s out as a starting cornerback, and will probably be playing for someone else come next season. Ahlello Witherspoon has his flaws, but there is a promising foundation there as a starter.

He can’t be counted on to be considered a No. 1 cornerback, though. The 49ers need to get somebody in the NFL Draft, probably in the first round if things play out the right way. Ramsey is a lofty goal given his superstar ability, but the 49ers need a shutdown cornerback.
