How good exactly can the 49ers be next season?

The first Super Bowl 53 odds of 2018 have arrived, and while we haven’t even gotten through Super Bowl 52, it still provides some insight as we try and figure out what is in store for next season.

The San Francisco 49ers have been installed by the Westgate SuperBook at 20/1 to win Super Bowl 53. They have the third best odds in the NFC West, behind the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks (both at 18/1). The New England Patriots are the favorites at 5/1, with the Pittsburgh Steelers following at 8/1, and then the Philadelphia Eagles, Minnesota Vikings, and Green Bay Packers at 10/1.

Super Bowl odds are not exactly predictive, since there will be teams that come out of nowhere, and some expected quality teams that fall apart. However, it does give us a good idea of perceptions about next season. I thought it would be interesting to pull out the Super Bowl odds for all 13 of the 49ers opponents next year.

Here are the Super Bowl odds for those teams, ordered by most to least favored.

Vikings: 10/1
Packers: 10/1
Rams: 18/1
Seahawks 18/1
Chargers: 30/1
Chiefs: 30/1
Raiders: 30/1
Broncos: 40/1
Cardinals: 40/1
Lions: 40/1
Buccaneers: 40/1
Giants: 60/1
Bears: 100/1

At 20/1, the 49ers have better odds than nine of those teams, and ten total games (two matchups with the Cardinals). This does not mean the 49ers are going to go 10-6 next season, but it shows an intriguing perception of the team heading into the coming season.

And I’d say assessing teams based on Super Bowl futures is as useful, if not more so than looking at a team’s record the previous season. These futures will change as we get into free agency and the draft, but it provides a baseline moving forward.
