The San Francisco 49ers released their unofficial Week 6 depth chart for Monday Night Football vs. the Green Bay Packers, and plenty will change. The team is dealing with an assortment of injuries, and head coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledged they are looking at some reserve options at several positions.
The team got things going by signing running back Matthew Dayes to the practice squad, and working out five running backs. They also brought Jack Heneghan back in for a tryout, per NFL reporter Howard Balzer. He spent 2018 training camp with the team, so it might have been more just getting on the same page to see where he’s at physically being out of football the first five weeks of the season. If the 49ers sign Heneghan, it will be to the practice squad.
The 49ers have a couple days to sort through what they want to do next. Since they are playing on Monday instead of Sunday, their first practice is not until Thursday. Any outside additions will happen by then, while practice squad promotions will not happen until the weekend. They don’t have a lot of spots to clear players, which could leave defensive end Ryan Delaire potentially on the outside looking in. The 49ers promoted him this past week to help with the pass rush, and he was active over interior defensive tackle D.J. Jones. Delaire had 10 snaps on the day, and one has to wonder how the 49ers want to approach the pass rush against Aaron Rodgers.
Here’s a look at where the depth chart stands as of Wednesday morning. We’ll likely find out on Thursday if the team is going to sign any outside options. If nobody signs by Thursday, then we wait for the weekend and any practice squad promotions.
